RESUMO

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), due to excellent electronic properties, are emerging as a promising semiconductor for diverse electronic applications with superiority over silicon. However, until now, the supposed superiority of CNTs by "head-to-head" comparison within a well-defined voltage range remains unrealized. Here, we report aligned CNT (ACNT)-based electronics on a glass wafer and successfully develop a 250-nm gate length ACNT-based field-effect transistor (FET) with an almost identical transfer curve to a "90-nm" node silicon device, indicating a three- to four-generation superiority. Moreover, a record gate delay of 9.86 ps is achieved by our ring oscillator, which exceeds silicon even at a lower supply voltage. Furthermore, the fabrication of basic logic gates indicates the potential for further digital integrated circuits. All of these results highlight ACNT-based FETs on the glass wafer as an effective solution/platform for further development of CNT-based electronics.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are a type of nanomaterial that have excellent electrical properties such as high carrier mobility, high saturation velocity, and small inherent capacitance, showing great promise in radio frequency (RF) applications. Decades of development have been made mainly on cut-off frequency and amplification; however, frequency conversion for RF transceivers, such as CNT-based mixers, has been rarely reported. In this work, based on randomly oriented carbon nanotube films, we focused on exploring the frequency conversion capability of CNT-based RF mixers. CNT-based RF transistors were designed and fabricated with a gate length of 50 nm and gate width of 100 µm to obtain nearly 30 mA of total current and 34 mS of transconductance. The Champion RF transistor has demonstrated cut-off frequencies of 78 GHz and 60 GHz for fT and fmax, respectively. CNT-based mixers achieve high conversion gain from -11.4 dB to -17.5 dB at 10 to 15 GHz in the X and Ku bands. Additionally, linearity is achieved with an input third intercept (IIP3) of 18 dBm. It is worth noting that the results from this work have no matching technology or tuning instrument assistance, which lay the foundations for the application of Ku band transceivers integrated with CNT amplifiers.

Aligned carbon nanotubes (ACNTs) have been considered as a promising candidate semiconductor with great potential in radiofrequency (RF) electronics due to their high carrier mobility/saturation velocity and small intrinsic capacitance. However, almost all of previously reported works focused on only the cutoff frequency, which is far from enough for practical RF application. In this work, given the speed advantage of ACNTs, we further explore amplitude amplification and frequency conversion capability of ACNTs based RF devices simultaneously, which are two basic functions in RF electronics. Considering there is no de-embedding process for amplification/conversion and reduction power loss, multifinger configuration RF transistors (still having current density around 1 mA/µm) were fabricated with cutoff frequency and maximum oscillation frequency exceeding 150 and 130 GHz, respectively. Based on dedicated ACNTs based RF FETs, we demonstrate almost 7 dB power gain (S21) with over 40 GHz 3-dB bandwidth for amplification and from -12.7 to -17 dB of conversion gain with over 25 dBm IIP3 (input third-order intercept point) of linearity for conversion simultaneously operating at 30 GHz in millimeter wave (mmWave) band both without any tuning instruments and matching technology assistance. The performance achieved here is the best among all the nanomaterials at the mmWave band.

Semiconducting carbon nanotube (CNT) film is a promising material for constructing high-performance complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) integrated circuits (ICs) and highly sensitive field-effect transistor (FET) bio/chemical sensors. Moreover, CNT logic transistors and sensors can be integrated through a compatible low-temperature fabrication process, providing enough thermal budget to construct monolithic three-dimensional (M3D) systems for smart sensors. However, an M3D sensing chip based on CNT film has not yet been demonstrated. In this work, we develop M3D technology to fabricate CNT CMOS ICs and CNT sensor arrays in two different layers; then, we demonstrate a preliminary M3D sensing system comprising CNT CMOS interfacing ICs in the bottom layer and CNT sensors in the upper layer through interlayer vias as links. As a typical example, a highly sensitive hydrogen sensing IC has been demonstrated to perform in situ sensing and processing functions through upper-layer FET-based hydrogen sensors exposed to the environment and bottom-layer CNT CMOS voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) interfacing circuits. The M3D CNT sensing ICs convert hydrogen concentration information (8-128 ppm) to digital frequency information (0.78-1.11 GHz) with a sensitivity of 2.75 MHz/ppm. M3D sensing technology is expected to provide a universal sensing system for future smart sensing chips, including multitarget detection and ultralow power sensors.

Background Aberrant expression of circular RNAs (circRNAs) contributes to the initiation and progression of pulmonary hypertension (PH). Hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) is a well-known modulator of hypoxia-induced PH. The role and underlying mechanism of circRNAs in the regulation of HIF expression remains elusive. Methods and Results We profiled pulmonary artery transcriptomes using RNA sequencing and screened circRNAs associated with hypoxia treatment. The expression of a novel circRNA, circ_chr11_67292179-67294612 (circ-myh8), was increased by hypoxia in a time-dependent manner. We evaluated the effects of circ-myh8 overexpression by adeno-associated virus or inhibition by short hairpin RNA on proliferation and cell cycling in mice and pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells. Overexpression of circ-myh8 promotes PH under normoxia, and disruption of circ-myh8 by short hairpin RNA mitigates PH in chronic hypoxic mice. Biologically, circ-myh8 induces the proliferation and cell-cycle progression of pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells in vivo and in vitro. Mechanistically, RNA pull-down and RNA immunoprecipitation assays were used to examine the interaction of circRNAs with the binding protein KAT7 (lysine acetyltransferase 7). The acetylation level of lysine 5 of histone H4 in the transcriptional initiation region of HIF1α was determined by chromatin immunoprecipitation assay followed by reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Circ-myh8 acts as a modular scaffold to recruit histone acetyltransferase KAT7 to the promoters of HIF1α, which elicits acetylation of lysine 5 of histone H4 in their promoters. Conclusions Our findings not only reveal the pivotal roles of circ-myh8 in governing histone modification in anti-PH treatment but also advocate triggering the circ-myh8/KAT7/HIF1α pathway to combat PH.

OBJECTIVES: This review summarizes the measurements of intrinsic capacity in 5 domains across different studies and evaluates the quality of research papers. DESIGN: Scoping review of papers written in English and Chinese published in peer-reviewed journals. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: The intrinsic capacity of older adults was assessed using the multidomain structure (Cognition, Locomotion, Psychological, Sensory and Vitality) proposed by the World Health Organization. METHODS: We searched PubMed, MEDLINE, and Web of Science for papers in English, and CNKI, CBM for papers written in Chinese published until September 13, 2022. Both cross-sectional and cohort studies of multidomain measurements of intrinsic capacity were included. Three independent reviewers appraised the quality of studies, and Cohen's kappa was calculated to determine interrater reliability. Data were listed by author, year, setting, country, age range and number of participants, measurement and calculation of intrinsic capacity, and data acquisition method. RESULTS: We included 53 studies. Twenty-one studies were of high quality, 31 studies were of moderate quality, and 1 study was of low quality. Measurements of intrinsic capacity and derivation of the summative index score were heterogeneous. Intrinsic capacity was usually assessed in 4 or 5 domains. Sensory was the most frequently overlooked domain or subdivided into vision and hearing in some studies. Indicators of vitality were the most heterogeneous. We also found consistency in heterogeneous measurements. The most common measurements of cognition, locomotion, and psychological capacity were the Mini-Mental State Examination, Short Physical Performance Battery, and Geriatric Depression Scale respectively. Self-reported questionnaires were commonly adopted in sensory domain. The Mini-Nutritional Assessment and grip strength were the most measured indicators of vitality. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: The focus on capacity and disease should be balanced to better promote healthy aging in older adults. Heterogeneity of intrinsic capacity measurements underscores the need for consensus about standardized measurements and calculation procedures.

Eight compounds were obtained from the dry fruits of Piper longum L., and their potential vascular relaxant activities were explored. The present study first revealed the access of Rosin (7) and Piperchabaoside (8) in the medicinal plant Piper longum L. The vessel tension studies showed that Piperine (2), (2E,4E,14Z)-N-isobutyleicosa-2,4,14-trienamide (3), and Piperlonguminine (6) exerted significant inhibitory effects on PE-induced mesenteric artery vasoconstriction. Furthermore, Calcium Imaging studies were applied to observe the effect of Piperine on the intracellular calcium in mesenteric artery smooth muscle cells (MASMCs). Piperine (2) was observed to promote the influx of extracellular calcium in MASMCs, and via an endothelium-independent mechanism involving Ca2+ entry. Piper longum L. might have a great potential to be further studied as a vascular relaxant, even to be a drug candidate of anti-hypertension.

Owing to the combination of high carrier mobility and saturation velocity, low intrinsic capacitance, and excellent stability, the carbon nanotube (CNT) has been considered as a perfect semiconductor to construct radio frequency (RF) field-effect transistors (FETs) and circuits with an ultrahigh frequency band. However, the reported CNT RF FETs usually exhibited poor real performance indicated by the as-measured maximum oscillation frequency (fmax), and then the amplifiers, which are the most important and fundamental RF circuits, suffered from a low power gain and a low frequency band. In this work, we build RF transistors on solution-derived randomly orientated CNT films with improved quality and uniformity. The randomly orientated CNT film FETs exhibit the record as-measured maximum fmax of 90 GHz, demonstrating the potential for over 28 GHz (at least one-third of 90 GHz) 5G mmWave (frequency range 2) applications. Benefiting from the large-scale uniformity of CNT films, FETs are designed and fabricated with a large channel width to present low internal resistance for the standard 50 Ω impedance matching guide line, which is critical to construct an RF amplifier. Furthermore, we first demonstrate amplifiers with a maximum power gain up to 11 dB and output third-order intercept point (OIP3) of 15 dBm, both at the K-band, which represents the record of a CNT amplifier and is even comparable with a commercial amplifier based on III-V RF transistors.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Hydroxysafflor yellow A (HSYA) is the principal constituent of the flowers of Carthamus tinctorius L., a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, which has been used for the treatment of cerebrovascular and cardiovascular diseases due to its property of promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis. It is dominated in the water extract of Carthamus tinctorius L., which has been used in the clinical treatment for cardiovascular diseases. HSYA exerts a variety of pharmacological efficacy upon the vascular system. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: To investigate the vascular dilatation effect of HSYA on rat mesenteric artery (MA) and its potential mechanism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adult male Wistar rats were applied to the study. Tension studies were conducted to determine the dilatation activity of HSYA against pre-contracted mesenteric arterial (MA) rings by U 46619 and Phenylephrine (PE). The vascular activities were measured with or without incubation with some selective inhibitors, including L-N(ω)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME, a nitro oxide synthase inhibitor), HC-067047 (a selective TRPV4 antagonist), BaCl2 (a Kir channel blocker), and Indomethacin (Indo, a nonselective cyclooxygenase inhibitor), respectively. Immunocytochemistry, Calcium Imaging, NO Production detection, and Western Blot were also employed to further study the underlying mechanism. RESULTS: HSYA reversed the constriction of MAs induced by U 46619 in a manner of concentration dependency, and the dilatation capability was reversed by L-NAME. This effect was significantly dependent on the intactness of MA endothelium, accompanying an increment of NO production in mesenteric arterial endothelium cells. The increment of NO production was reversed by inhibiting the PKA. Also, the expression of p-eNOS was activated by HSYA shown in Western Blot assays. The cells imaging revealed a significant increase and drop of the influx of Ca2+ before and after treatment with HC-067047. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that HSYA exerts vessel dilation effect on MAs via a TRPV4-dependent influx of Ca2+ in endothelium cells, PKA-dependent eNOS phosphorylation and NO production mechanism. The present study indicates that HSYA has the potential to be a future candidate for the treatment of hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Increased expression levels of bone morphogenetic protein 7 (BMP7) are associated with poor prognosis in pulmonary hypertension patients. However, whether BMP7 signaling conspire to involve in the proliferation of pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMC) underlying monocrotaline (MCT) induced pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) remain unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS: Western blot experiments found BMP7 was increased in pulmonary arteries isolated from MCT-PAH rat. In addition, monocrotaline pyrrole (MCTP), the putative toxic metabolite of the MCT, increases the expression of BMP7, proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and activin A receptor type 2A, but decreases bone morphogenetic protein receptor type 2 in cultured pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMC). In PASMCs, exogenous BMP7 leads to the decreasing expression of activin A receptor type 2, increasing phosphorylation of p38MAPK and elevation of P21. However, BMP7 treatment results in the increasing expression of activin A receptor type 2A, p38MAPK, and PCNA in bone morphogenetic protein receptor type 2 knockdown PASMCs. Knockdown of activin A receptor type 2A abrogated the MCTP-induced PCNA and cell cycle progression. CONCLUSIONS: MCTP treatment lead to the expression of BMP7, suppression of bone morphogenetic protein receptor type 2 but increasing expression of activin A receptor type 2A, the BMP7 mediated PASMC proliferation via preferential activation of an activin A receptor type 2A signaling axis.

Gerbera piloselloides (L.) Cass. (Compositae) possesses various biological effects. It is used as an oriental remedy for relieving cough and resolving phlegm. The present study is to investigate the vasodilation effects of Gerbera piloselloides on isolated rat mesenteric arteries (MAs) and the potential mechanism. Different organic extracts of Gerbera piloselloides were tested, and an HPLC-UV-FD-based analytical method was established to identify the active constituents. The principal components, namely, 8-MOP (8-methoxypsoralan) and 8-MSD (8-methoxysmyrindiol), were found to be predominant in the extracts of petroleum ether and dichloroform, which showed stronger vasodilation activities. 8-MSD was isolated from Gerbera piloselloides by silica gel column chromatography coupled with a Waters 2545 high throughput autopurification system, and its vasodilation effects were explored by an assay of tension on rat MA rings. The results suggest that 8-MSD induces vascular relaxation in rat MAs via an endothelium-dependent mechanism involving the Kir channel, which enables Ca2+ entry in the cell and activates production of NO. The present research indicates that 8-MSD may be therapeutically useful as an anti-hypertension agent and to potentially treat cardiovascular and gastrointestinal diseases.

RESUMO

This paper develops a fourth order entropy stable scheme to approximate the entropy solution of one-dimensional hyperbolic conservation laws. The scheme is constructed by employing a high order entropy conservative flux of order four in conjunction with a suitable numerical diffusion operator that based on a fourth order non-oscillatory reconstruction which satisfies the sign property. The constructed scheme possesses two features: (1) it achieves fourth order accuracy in the smooth area while keeping high resolution with sharp discontinuity transitions in the nonsmooth area; (2) it is entropy stable. Some typical numerical experiments are performed to illustrate the capability of the new entropy stable scheme.
